older every day

Occasionally I get sad (or at least wistful) when Sadie does or says something that makes me think, wow...she's really growing up. Whenever it happens, Reid and I usually chime in: "SADIESIMONTON, 2 L!"
2 as in too, L as in little. It's our silly way of acknowledging it while simultaneously trying to put the brakes on.

One such example might include her asking for---no, demanding--- sausage (saas eeeeegh! saas eeeeegh!). Yep, she's definitely our kid. (Although for a while there I was skeptical, seeing as how she doesn't like bacon.)

But there ARE benefits to getting older, ones that we can enjoy as a whole family:

That's right...with summer comes biking, and with being one-and-almost-a-half comes your very own helmet and the green light to ride in a bike trailer. The newfound freedom that this relatively minor development affords us has been astounding. Suddenly we can dust off those (barely used) mountain bikes and hit the road! We can bike to restaurants, the park, concerts, and almost anything Bend has to offer. And in case you can't tell from the pics, we're not the only one who enjoys it!

warming up

It's finally summer here in Bend. Yeah, I know, it's the middle of June and most of the country has been having 80 degree temps for well over a month now. But apparently Central Oregon is the climate that time forgot, because we've been perpetually stuck in spring---no, winter---until just a few days ago.

Our first big shock came a few weekends back, when we so unwisely went camping. One might prepare for warm days and mild nights in June. And prepare we did (or didn't, as the case may be), because we left our subzero sleeping bags and puffy down jackets at home, and opted instead for hoodies and light blankets. Now, perhaps our judgment was clouded by the fact we were taking our cozy little camper and would not be relegated to sleeping on the ground. Perhaps that was the fatal misstep. Because we, to put it bluntly, froze our asses off.

By midnight the thermometer was plunging toward 20. What little body heat we did retain went into keeping sweet Sadie Simonton warm and toasty between us. She actually slept rather well, wrapped in every available blanket we had. Reid and I on the other hand...well, let's just say: thank god we have a sense of humor.

Despite zero sleep and frostbitten fingers, I managed to take this picture when the sun came out the following morning:

These two girls are impossibly cute together. They really are the bestest of buddies, and will happily play for hours on end, oblivious to the adults around them. I love watching them grow up together!

30-year facelift

For her 30th birthday, Butterball (yep, she finally earned a name) got a full-fledged makeover. New fabric, new padding, new vinyl---the works. Pretty damn hot, don't ya think?

Doot doot! Summer, here we come!
